About Heath Hen Quilt Shop
The Heath Hen Quilt Shop was established in 1982. The original store was named after the heath hen, a local bird that became extinct and was last seen in the State Forrest on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard.
After 15 years the original founder sold the shop and a new proprietor who changed the name to the Heath Hen Yarn and Quilt Shop. After operating the store for 13 years retirement beckoned and the Island store was again placed for sale.
Although there were many interested buyers, faithful Island customers feared the Heath Hen would once again become extinct.
In October of 2010, at what seemed to be the last possible chance before the store’s extinction, local artist Jan Paul stepped-forward and purchased the store, preserving for the Island’s craft community what has become an Island institution. In the Spring of 2011, the store was moved to it’s new home in Woodland Center located on State Road in Vineyard Haven.
